In a rare moment of history, no fitness setting has been more celebrated than the world-famous “Muscle Beach” that is located in Santa Monica in 1934 to this day just south of the Santa Monica Pier. This video interview includes a discussion with Deforrest “Moe” Most, the Santa Monica City Recreation Director at Muscle Beach from approximately 1949 to 1958. In 1958, the City of Santa Monica removed the weightlifting and gymnastics equipment due to difficulties in the maintenance and supervision of the facility, yet original Muscle Beach athletes continued gymnastics activities throughout the years. In 1989, the City of Santa Monica officially rededicated the Muscle Beach site and restored the gymnastics equipment. This interview includes reflections of Moe Most about these topics from his perspective in 2005.
